Zolan was such a handyman from a young boy always building things from wood just like his Grandfather Zolan. And, as in the Club House, this little boy is taking time from his game to build the perfect home for his little friend.

Commissioned by the Danbury Mint for a New York Yankees Collector Plate program, Sleep Tight Slugger shows a young boy fast asleep in his dream world of baseball. He could be dreaming about his game tomorrow, or maybe even better he’s dreaming about the day when he too will become a great baseball star. This is the world of childhood, the world of dreams, the world of believing that dreams can come true.

Every baseball game starts with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. An American tradition, Zolan wanted to capture that nostalgic moment of time. All of America’s greatest baseball players must have started this way in humble beginnings on their hometown field.

Even though Zolan was not a sports enthusiast, but when it came time for baseball season, he was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. Living close to Wrigley field, many Saturdays were spent at the ballpark with the family cheering only for the Cubs.

Rained Out is a classic Donald Zolan painting style portraying those precious moments of childhood in times past. Zolan captured a part of himself in this painting of a little boy so excited to play ball and then to wake up to the rain with a big disappointment. He even captured the same disheartened look in the puppy too with both sharing the sadness together on the front porch on a rainy Saturday morning.

Two little boys enjoying the simple pleasures of swinging on a tire swing after playing a game of baseball on a clear summer Midwestern day is a scene reminiscent from Zolan’s childhood in Kiwanis Park. Zolan had created that feeling of freedom of simply enjoying the day and doing whatever felt good at that moment. Even the bark of the trees are painted white just as they were on Prairie Avenue, his boyhood home.
