Created on the day after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, Zolan returned to his studio and began sketching his ideas for Faith in America. He wanted to portray unity in America’s ethnic diversity through the innocence of children.

Since September 11, 2001, Faith in America has circulated the globe in inspirational e-mails. Years later, this painting continues to inspire and touch the hearts and minds of Americans.

An American pastime, most little boys will share in the fun of trading baseball cards with their friends much in the same way that Zolan and his older brother did on the front porch of their home in Brookfield, Illinois with Skipper, the family dog. Naturally being from Chicago, the family was a loyal Cub’s fan.

Attics played a very important role in Zolan’s early years. Growing up in post World War II America in a bungalow style home in Brookfield, Illinois, Zolan shared a bedroom with his uncle and brother in the attic. His first studio was in Grandma Zolan’s attic which did not have heating or air conditioning. Zolan fondly recalled painting in Grandma’s attic during the winter with his galoshes and gloves.

Zolan captured a part of Americana in Growing Up Country. He loved those midwestern days when the skies were bright blue and clouds were fluffy white like cotton candy. As Zolan’s Mother, Marge, often said, ‘these are the days of innocence when life was a bowl of cherries’.

After a weekend bike ride in Vermont’s countryside, Let’s Play was created. The little girl in the painting was one of Donald’s favorite models in the 1980’s.

Summertime Friends is truly all about a boy named Donald Zolan who loved to play at Salt Creek with his dog Skipper. Playing at the creek was a family tradition; a place where Zolan’s father went swimming as a young boy and where the Zolan brothers would play together. And, this little boy’s fascination with turtles is reminiscent of the little boy in Zolan. The background to the painting was inspired by a walk in the park in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Skipper was the Zolan’s family dog named after Skippy’s Peanut Butter, his favorite food. As Zolan was painting Giggles and Wiggles, he was reliving his boyhood memories with Skipper his faithful dog always waiting by the door for him to come home from school. And as always when Zolan opened the door, Skipper would jump into his arms showering him with licks and kisses just as in Giggles and Wiggles.
